Larry Funston & Oadbe Associates Limited
COO and Managing Designer
Larry Funston was educated in Interior Design at Ryerson
University of Toronto. He began his career in retail store design in 1970. With
his retail background and love of space planning, ophthalmic office design
became a keen interest. Having completed over 300 ophthalmic projects ranging
in scope from a small frame room to full-facility ophthalmic buildings, he is
experienced and brings an exciting and unique approach to design.
Larry and Oadbe have won several International Council of Shopping Center
Design Awards for best stores for his retail clients. Oadbe designs for IBM
stores, Fanny May, Fannie Farmer, Laura Secord, Timothy's World Coffee, Fuji
Film Canada, Hallmark Stores and several other national retail store accounts.
Oadbe's eye care projects have been featured in Eye Care Business, 20/20, AOA
Journal, and Vision Monday. All Oadbe eye care designs are created by Larry
Funston.
Fred Kahn, Design Project Consultant
Specializing in Pre-Design Planning
Though educated as a civil engineer, Fred followed his family's
three-generation tradition of working in the ophthalmic field. He became
interested in office design early in his 55-year career when he saw the need
for more effective professional facilities.
Fred has traveled extensively in Canada and the United States, interviewing
doctors, developing projects and witnessing successful practice management
concepts. He joined Larry Funston at Oadbe to specialize in pre-design
planning, helping doctors answer questions on location, square footage, renting
vs. owning, planning for growth, and so on.
He has written numerous articles, lectured at the University of Waterloo School
of Optometry and various optical meetings. His first book, Maximizing the
Potential of Your Ophthalmic Office: What You Need to Know about Planning and
Design was published by Butterworth-Heinemann, 2001.
Judy Cadle, C.O.E., Design Project Consultant
Specializing in the Practice Management and Design Relationship
Fifteen years experience owning a graphic arts firm and another
fifteen years as practice administrator for a high-volume, multi-location ophthalmic
practice contribute to Judy's strong background in marketing and practice
management.
She is a Certified Ophthalmic Executive. She has lectured at the American
Society of Ophthalmic Administrators annual meetings on Organization and
Communication, Holistic Marketing, and Optical Marketing.
As a practice administrator, she recommended Larry Funston for office
expansion, building a modern, accessible optical department. Three years later
she recommended Larry for a second project-the renovation of a burger drive-in
into a full service, full-time satellite office that exceeded all expectations.
She accepted an opportunity to join Oadbe Associates, Ltd. after the principle
doctor in the practice retired.
